STORE-1PLUSMG is an infrastructure project designed to accelerate the implementation of the European 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) Initiative, which is aimed to enable secure and ethical cross-border access to high‑quality genomic and clinical data in order to transform the future of healthcare and research in Europe. The project will establish secure, federated, and sustainable storage and pre-processing infrastructure to support the ingestion, management, and long-term preservation of curated genomic data generated by European and national sequencing initiatives, including the Genome of Europe project.
To achieve this, STORE-1PLUSMG will develop a scalable and cost-effective strategy for genomic data storage and processing, while enabling participating countries to procure and deploy production-ready infrastructure under harmonised technical and operational requirements. The project will also support the integration of these infrastructures with secure processing environments and relevant European regulatory frameworks.
Building on the foundations of previous 1+MG-related projects (e.g. GDI), STORE-1PLUSMG will strengthen the long-term sustainability and governance of the federated European genomics ecosystem. By providing the infrastructure needed to store, process, and share genomic data at scale, the project will support cross-border research and innovation, facilitate secondary use of genomic data at scale, and contribute to the advancement of personalised medicine in Europe.
The contribution of ELIXIR Belgium is described in WP3: Technical and Architectural Framework and the work will focus on creating a blueprint that offers practical approaches to build the infrastructure architecture, which will be used as reference in the project. This infrastructure will comply with the most recent European regulations, applicable standards and storage strategy defined in the earlier stages of the project.
